Shop Our Favorite Gear

I only recommend gear I actually use or trust enough to bring offshore myself. If it can’t handle long days, wet decks, heat, cold, and hard commercial use, it doesn’t make the list.

Check back often. I’ll keep adding gear I’ve tested so you don’t have to.

XTRATUF has become a huge name, but these boots earned their reputation on working docks long before they became popular everywhere else.

Showa Orange (Cheaper) Lightweight Fishing Gloves

Showa Orange (Cheaper) Lightweight Fishing Gloves

Showa Orange (Cheaper) Lightweight Fishing Gloves

Showa Orange (Cheaper) Lightweight Fishing Gloves

Why I Like Them
These are classic commercial fishing gloves. I use them on the boats all the time, and SHOWA’s orange and blue gloves are both staples in the industry.

When I Use Them
The orange pair is my choice for lightweight, flexible gloves when wiring fish, cleaning fish, and doing everyday deck work. They’re cheaper than the heavier blue pair, but the thinner material is easier to nick or cut.

Why I’d Own Both
Keep the orange gloves for flexibility and lighter work, and the insulated blue gloves for heavier jobs and colder days. Both have a place on the boat.

SHOWA Heavy Blue Insulated Fishing Gloves

SHOWA Heavy Blue Insulated Fishing Gloves

SHOWA Heavy Blue Insulated Fishing Gloves

SHOWA Heavy Blue Insulated Fishing Gloves

Why I Like Them
These are another commercial fishing staple from SHOWA. The extra-dipped rubber is much more durable than the lightweight orange pair, and they hold up well through repeated use.

When I Use Them
These are my choice for heavier work and colder days on the boat. They have light insulation for extra warmth, although they can get hot when you’re working hard.

Why I’d Own Both
I recommend having both pairs. The blue gloves give you durability and warmth, while the orange gloves are lighter, more flexible, and cheaper.

Dexter Outdoors SOFGRIP 8" Flexible Fillet Knife

Dexter 8-Inch Fillet Knife

Why I Like It
Dexter is a staple on fishing boats. Across all the fisheries I’ve worked in, it’s the most common knife brand I’ve seen, from fillet knives to the other knives we use on deck.

Why I Use It
It’s a brand I know and trust from working around fish. They make great knives, and this 8-inch fillet knife is a solid choice for filleting your catch.

Who It’s For
Anyone who fillets their own fish and wants a straightforward knife from a brand you’ll see on working commercial boats.

Why I Wear Them on the Water
Good polarized lenses make a difference when you’re dealing with glare off the ocean. These are built for saltwater use, which is what I want out on the boats.

My go-to cameras for the money.

Waterproof, up to 5.3K, and what I use for most of my footage.

Why I like them:
Full-frame 8:7 lets me use the same footage for vertical reels and horizontal YouTube videos.

Keep batteries ready:
I recommend two batteries per camera and this charger to keep spares ready. You never know what’s coming over the rail.

Dji M

My favorite drone setup for the money.

Easy to fly, with sharp 4K video for vertical reels and widescreen YouTube videos.

Why I like it:
The remote has its own screen, so I don’t need my phone while flying offshore. Three batteries give me plenty of filming time between charges.

Why I buy this package:
It includes spare propellers, an SD card and a carrying case that holds everything. The extra blades are handy on a boat, and they’re easy to replace. I also use the optional protection plan on Amazon.

GoPro Mission 1 PRO

GoPro Mission 1 PRO

A badass addition to my camera setup.

I run one MISSION 1 alongside two HERO13 Blacks. Up to 8K video and long battery life make this a new favorite.

Why I like it:
The new Enduro 2 batteries work in my HERO13s, and my HERO13 Enduro batteries work as backups in the MISSION 1. That makes upgrading easy when you already have spare batteries. Use the new Enduro 2 for the longest recording time.

GoPro HERO13 Black Creator Edition

My main cameras for underwater fishing footage.

I’ve used GoPro HERO13 Black cameras for years to film underwater and capture extra angles around the boat. They’re a more affordable option than the MISSION and still have a place in my everyday camera setup.

Why I like this bundle:
It comes with three batteries, SD cards, a float, and other GoPro accessories I’d actually use on a fishing boat. It covers several things you’d otherwise buy separately, making it a solid starting setup. If I were starting from scratch, I’d buy two of these bundles.

GoPro Wireless Mic Complete Kit

GoPro Wireless Mic Complete Kit

Better voice audio without spending a fortune.

I’m using these in my latest videos, and you’ll see me learning as I go.

Why I like them:
I pair one mic per GoPro over Bluetooth. Separate mic and camera audio lets me blend clearer voices with natural boat sounds when editing. Good battery life, too.

The downside:
Sometimes they need reconnecting after being switched off. Taking gloves off to fix that is a pain, but overall I like them for the money.

Suptig Jaws Flex Clamp Moun for GoPro

The mount I use most on the boat.

These helped me go from fisherman to cameraman without getting fired. I started with them, and I still use them today.

Why I like them:
Sturdy grip, quick setup and easy to move around the boat for different angles. For underwater shots, I clamp one to a pole and tie on a safety line. Hit the GoPro’s quick-record button, get the shot and get back to work.

What I use for clearer boat audio.

I use the GoPro Media Mod on my main B-roll cameras for commercial fishing videos. These GoPros capture the wider view of the deck, the crew, and the sounds of the boat working.

Why I like it:
My wireless mics capture the talking, while these cameras pick up the engine and deck gear for the finished video. My light mounts right onto the Media Mod, keeping the camera, audio, and lighting together in one compact setup.

Suptig LED Video Light

The light I keep on my B-roll GoPros.

This LED light clicks right into the GoPro Media Mod, making it easy to add light when filming on the boat. I like keeping the two together on my B-roll cameras so the setup is ready when I need it.

Why I like it:
I keep two of these lights so I can swap them out when one runs low. Having a charged spare means I can keep filming on deck without getting stuck with a dead light.

GoPro Chesty - Performance Chest Mount

GoPro Chesty - Performance Chest Mount

GoPro Chesty - Performance Chest Mount

What I use for first-person fishing footage.

I use the official GoPro chest harness to capture a first-person view of the work on deck. It keeps the camera on my chest and leaves my hands free.

Why I like it:
It gives me another B-roll angle to mix with the wider boat shots, so you can see the work from my point of view.

Keep in mind:
This harness fits snugly, but body straps can still catch on fishing gear. Stay clear of moving equipment and running lines, and leave it off if there’s a snag risk. Getting the shot isn’t worth getting hurt.

Memory Cards gopro and drone

Memory Cards gopro and drone

Memory Cards gopro and drone

The cards I use in my GoPros and drone.

I stick with SanDisk Extreme PLUS in 128GB or 256GB.

Why I like them:
Enough space to keep filming without constantly unloading footage. I usually use 128GB cards in my drone and underwater GoPros, so there’s less money lost if the gear doesn’t come back.

Don’t overlook recording speed:
High-resolution video needs a card that can keep up. Storage space matters, but speed matters too. This is one place I don’t grab the cheapest option.
